Colin graduated from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, in 2009 with a degree in Mathematics. His studies included viscous and inviscid fluid flow, elasticity, Newtonian and rigid-body mechanics, waves, multi-dimensional dynamic systems, numerical analysis, partial differential equations and complex-variable analysis.

He remained at Strathclyde and completed his PhD in 2013, researching thin ridges, rivulets and droplets of fluid subject to external airflows in a variety of industrial and naturally-occurring contexts. During both his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, Colin taught early-year Mathematics and Engineering undergraduate students in a wide range of topics in Mathematics.

Colin joined Keltie in 2013 and qualified as a Patent Attorney in 2018.
