As a member of Keltie’s IT, Telecoms and Electronics team, Samantha specialises in handling software and computer-implemented inventions, and particularly enjoys working with clients applying emerging ‘next generation’ digital technologies (such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and 5G) across a variety of technical fields. She is especially interested in the application and cross-over of such technologies in the field of precision medicine.
In her time at Keltie, Samantha has also worked with a variety of clients (from start-ups to multinational organisations) in other technology areas including payment processing technology, graphical user interfaces, 3D printing, augmented reality, and vehicular control systems. She has experience in drafting, prosecuting and opposing patent applications before the UK and European patent offices covering this wide range of subject matter
Samantha also is experienced in patent portfolio management, and advising clients on protecting financial technology innovations, particularly in relation to making use of the UK’s Patent Box scheme. She also advises her clients on issues of design protection, including the preparing and filing of registered designs in the UK and Europe; as well as carrying out freedom-to-operate assessments for clients across a range of technology areas.
Prior to joining Keltie, Samantha graduated from Durham University in 2010 with a Masters Degree in Physics with Astronomy, where her studies included condensed matter physics, lasers, spectroscopy and electromagnetism as well as astrophysics. She then went on to complete her PhD in Physics at the University of Cambridge in 2014, where she studied star formation in our galaxy using observations of emissions from gas and dust. During this time, she also taught undergraduate students in physics laboratory classes.
Samantha joined Keltie in 2014 and qualified as a UK and European Patent and Design Attorney in 2018. In the process of qualification, Samantha was awarded the Moss prize in 2016 by the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys for achieving the highest combined marks in the UK and Overseas Patent Law foundation examinations.

The Effect of the Unified Patent Court (UPC) on Opposition Proceedings at the European Patent Office (EPO)The introduction of the Unified Patent Court (UPC) has brought significant changes to the European patent landscape. This article, written by Nathaniel Taylor (of Keltie's Opposition and Appeals team), takes a closer look at the impact of the UPC on opposition proceedings at the European Patent Office (EPO). The article draws on a full year's worth of opposition data - available as of 1 April 2025 - for European patents granted since the Unitary Patent system began (i.e., European patents granted between 1 June 2023 and 1 June 2024). The analysis explores overall trends, technology-specific patterns, and the strategic motives behind relative opposition rates.

Case Law Review: Board of Appeal Decision T 1741/22Patent applications related to data processing often fall foul of the EPO’s exclusions on “mathematical methods”. Applicants in the MedTech space in particular may find it far easier to protect the hardware in their wearable devices and tools than to protect the software that processes and analyses that data. A recent board of appeal decision T 1741/22 seems to contradict the Guidelines for Examination and previous Board of Appeal decisions. This decision may shed some light on how the EPO may approach these data processing applications in future.
