Spotting an opportunity to develop his practice, Jason moved to Barker Brettell in Birmingham to work on their diverse client portfolio. However, born and raised in London, the draw of the capital saw Jason return in 2018.

Jason has worked in a diverse range of industries and sectors, from telecommunications to automotive and sport to nutrition supplements. He notes one of his career highlights as taking a sporting goods manufacturer and helping them to develop their IP portfolio in such a way as to allow them to more than triple their turnover within three years, and successfully enforce their registered trade marks in several countries around the world.

Asked why he enjoyed such success, Jason notes “My communication style and the fact I was happy to explain the intricacies of IP law in their language meant they saw me as an internal counsel and part of their business, rather than an external attorney. Being such an integrated member of the team meant I could contribute at the outset of idea generation - this is the key to securing a solid scope of protection for your ideas.”

At Keltie, Jason will work across our wide portfolio of clients and industries including sports, finance, cosmetics and fashion.

When asked what attracted Jason to Keltie, he highlights three key areas. First, the quality of our clients and secondly, the firm’s reputation, explaining that both inspired him to join. Thirdly, he adds the culture, atmosphere and environment matched with his aspirations to work in ‘not just another’ firm.

He notes the scope for progression as another key driver and sees Keltie as an opportunity to develop his practice and skills against a fantastic client portfolio, whilst working with great people.

“Keltie is not like other firms - the atmosphere just feels different. Everyone is open, approachable and there’s a sense of team you don’t find in many businesses. I can approach Partners for help and advice without any hierarchical awkwardness - it’s hard to describe, but I immediately just ‘clicked’ with the firm.”

Asked where he sees IP and trade marks developing in the future, Jason anticipates further and faster developments in technologies which interact with our lives. “We can see it already, with the advancements in device technology. Mobile phones are already an entrenched part of our lives, but we expect businesses to invest in ways to advertise on these platforms with augmented virtual reality, holograms and the AI engines behind them. These developments present real commercial opportunities and the scope of protection from trade marks will become even more important.”

On Jason’s appointment, Manuela Macchi, Partner and Trade Mark Attorney, added: “Jason has a problem-solving approach that is a perfect fit with Keltie's commercial attitude to client service. With his experience of hands-on direct client work, he is a huge asset for our Trade Mark Team.”

Jason concludes: “I’m thrilled and grateful to be a part of Keltie. The business’ reputation speaks for itself and I’m excited to be part of it.”
