Azhar's trade mark practice ranges from the filing and prosecution of UK, European Union and International trade mark and design applications to clearance searches, due diligence projects and advising on the law of infringement and passing off. Throughout his career, Azhar has managed the portfolios of many clients with an international reach and advises on worldwide filing and branding strategies. He also has a particular focus with respect to online enforcement, social media takedowns and anti-counterfeiting strategies.
With a keen interest in anti-counterfeiting, Azhar also assists the UK BorderForce Agency and European Customs Authorities with respect to measures that can be implemented in identifying potential counterfeit goods. With this insight, he has developed unique enforcement strategies that can be utilised by his clients when preparing customs and Enforcement Database (EDB) applications.
Azhar also represents clients in contentious matters before the UK Intellectual Property Office and European Union Intellectual Property Office in opposition proceedings, revocation and invalidity actions and has appeared as an advocate before the UK Intellectual Property Office in trade mark hearings. Azhar also has experience in cases before the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU).
In addition to trade marks, Azhar also advises on copyright and design matters and handles all aspects of domain name disputes before Nominet and WIPO. Azhar also has experience in negotiating settlement, co-existence and assignment agreements and has represented clients in mediations.
Azhar is also a regular commentator in the CITMA Review and CIPA Journal and lectures for the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (CITMA), the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) and the EUIPO Trade Marks and Design Education Program.
In addition to his lecturing roles, Azhar is also a frequent speaker at a number of global seminars and conferences and is Vice Chair of the International Trade Mark Association (INTA) Trade Mark Administrators Committee having previously served as Co-Chair of the TMA Special Projects Committee.
Azhar joined Keltie in 2009 as a law graduate from the University of Derby. He qualified as a Chartered Trade Mark Attorney, European Trade Mark Attorney and Member of the Chartered Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys in 2013 receiving the John Parker Memorial Award for his qualification results. He became a Partner at Keltie in 2019.
