Derek studied chemistry for two years before specialising in materials science and going on to complete a PhD in ceramic processing. He advises on patent matters in the materials, chemical and mechanical fields, and has experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications to protect medical devices, building products, automotive components, semiconductor devices and scientific instruments.

Derek joined Keltie in 2005 and qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in 2009.
Derek graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2002 with a degree in Natural Sciences. He specialised in materials science and studied a diverse range of subjects including metallurgy, composites, biomaterials, polymers and device fabrication. He received the Goldsmiths' medal for examination performance, and was short-listed for the Science, Engineering and Technology Student of the Year Awards in 2002 for his final-year project on the growth of carbon fibres.
In 2005, Derek completed a PhD in ceramic processing, studying the fabrication of micron-scale ceramic structures for gas sensors and the drying behaviour of inks and pastes.
