Facebook has announced that as of Saturday 13 June 2009, it will be possible for Facebook users to create a username as a URL (e.g. facebook.com/keltie). Registration will be available on a first-come, first-served basis leaving open the possibility that Facebook users will adopt the trade mark of a third party as their username, in the same way as a trade mark can be used as part of a domain name. However, Facebook will block the unauthorised use of a trade mark if the trade mark owner has notified Facebook of their trade mark registrations by filling out an electronic form (the Preventing of Registration of Username) which is available here.
If you have Facebook pages, it is recommended to register your own URLs either for your own Facebook presence or as a further defensive registration to stop others doing so. If you registered Facebook pages before 31 May 2009 or profiles before 6 June 2009 you can register Facebook URLs containing your trade marks on Saturday 13 June 2009 here.
